Catherine the Great on Enlightenment

How "Enlightened" is Catherine the Great? What parts of this demonstrate "Enlightment" on her part? What parts are not very "Enlightened"?

Another good job. Brice--that is fine but no further than that!! She is a fascinating character. In many ways she was enlightened but limited by her circumstances. She talked a good game but knew that her rule depended upon the nobility. So she could not go against them.

Catherine the Great was unconventionally enlightened. She collaborated with philosophes like Voltaire and Diderot. She believed in equality. However, as a female ruler, she had to gain power so she used techniques we would not consider enlightened, like giving more power to the nobles in one of her charters. However, she was one of Russia's best rulers, especially for being a woman and should get some credit for that, even if she wasn't the most enlightened.
